Stage 1 Mesothelioma

Stage 1 mesothelioma affects the pleura(sac lining) of one lung or a comparatively small portion of the abdomen. Stage 1 is an ideal time to detect and treat mesothelioma because it has not spread throughout the body.

The Earliest Stage

Stage 1 mesothelioma is considered the first stage of mesothelioma and the best possible stage to diagnose mesothelioma. It involves the pleura on one side of the body. The lymph nodes are definitively not affected at stage 1, and doctors often give stage 1 patients a better prognosis than others because there are more treatments available at that point.

Stage 1 Treatment Options

The three most common treatments for mesothelioma stage 1 are extrapleural pneumonectomy, pleurectomy with decortication, and cytoreduction. These procedures involve surgical intervention, with the physician’s treatment aimed at removing the affected linings of the lung or abdomen. Patients are often treated with chemotherapy and radiation, though that is only ancillary to the surgical intervention and aimed at stopping the cancerous mass from returning after surgery.

Diagnosing Stage 1 Mesothelioma

The most common way to diagnose mesothelioma is through a surgical biopsy of the affected tissues. Often, it’s hard to tell what stage of mesothelioma the patient is at, or even if the patient has mesothelioma versus a form of pneumonia. Other diagnostics involve X-rays and CT scans, though it is rare to diagnose stage 1 mesothelioma from those alone. The biopsy is central to diagnosing stage 1 mesothelioma, and the surgeon’s attention is most likely toward the chest or abdomen (thoracotomy and laparotomy, respectively).

Some simple descriptions of stage 1 mesothelioma are:

  • Cancer is only limited to one side of the body Does not affect the lymph nodes
  • Does not affect the lymph nodesSymptoms vary from barely noticeable degradation in
  • Symptoms vary from barely noticeable degradation in breath to coughing, fever, and chest pain.
  • urative and palliative care provide hopeful outlooks

Prognosis

The earlier mesothelioma is diagnosed, the better the patient’s prognosis. Stage 1 mesothelioma, if detected at that stage, is generally viewed positively by the doctor compared with later stages. If the patient is in good health, he or she can expect an aggressive treatment strategy for treating mesothelioma cancer.

Unfortunately, stage 1 diagnoses are exceedingly uncommon. The latency period, which is the time between exposure to asbestos and symptoms of mesothelioma can be up to 40 years. Accordingly, the symptoms are often mistaken for natural aging or common illnesses, such as the cold. If you or someone you loved worked in an environment known to have injured or exposed others to asbestos, you should consider all respiratory issues carefully and be sure to share the exposure history with relevant physicians.

Discovering mesothelioma at stage 1 can add considerable time to a patient’s life expectancy – but that doesn’t exclude later stage patients from improving their prognosis similarly. Good health at the outset of treatment can off-set some of the difficulties of discovering mesothelioma at a later stage.
